September 12th marked the 100th anniversary of Amilcar Cabral's birth. Cabral was instrumental in the fight for independence in Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde. Born in Guinea-Bissau to Cabo Verdean parents, Cabral emerged as a towering figure in the struggle against colonialism and imperialism, dedicating his life to the liberation of Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde from Portuguese colonial rule. Cabral founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde (PAIGC) in 1956, which would later become the vanguard of the liberation struggle in both countries. His dedication to social justice, grassroots mobilization, and the empowerment of African people serves as an inspiration to us all. That is why I sponsored and passed a resolution celebrating his life and legacy on the Boston City Council.
