With 32% of BPS students classified as English Learners and 11% of Boston’s adults (around 100,000 people) having limited English proficiency, many parents would benefit from English classes to support their children’s education and their career growth.
To address this need, I filed a hearing on BPS providing ESOL classes for parents. Since then, my office collaborated with English for New Bostonians to secure $300,000 through a budget override (Override 1P) to fund these classes. This funding aims to empower parents, strengthen their engagement in their children’s education, and improve communication across language communities. While key goals of Docket 0353 have been met, we’ll keep it in committee for future needs and work with the administration to ensure the effective use of these funds.
